Bari: two cities, one walk

Bari can be the journey’s first chapter, rather than just the arrival airport. The old centre brings an intimate encounter with daily life; the sea opens up the view; focaccia introduces the connection between baking and everyday eating. We suggest crossing the city through these transitions, with interpretation that connects monument to street and street to table.

Two urban forms, one walking route

Bari Vecchia occupies the peninsula between two harbours; its name distinguishes the old core from the new town developed from 1813 under Gioacchino Murat. The old centre and nineteenth-century quarter show different ways of organising space. Cross their boundary slowly, noticing street width, relationships between façades and passages, and where the sea becomes visible again. Finding your bearings becomes part of the visit rather than a difficulty solved only with a map.

San Nicola: stone, journeys and devotion

Saint Nicholas’s tomb was ready when Urban II consecrated the altar in 1089. Its appearance changed repeatedly: the covering donated by Serbian ruler Milutin in the fourteenth century and later Baroque silverwork express different periods of devotion and taste. Twentieth-century restoration moved the silver altar to the upper basilica. Reading this sequence makes the place less static: an ancient tomb can retain its religious meaning while its forms change.

The museum: understanding what the monument leaves out

The Museo Nicolaiano occupies rooms of the former pilgrims’ hospice in the Cittadella Nicolaiana, near the basilica, and preserves works and objects associated with the saint. It is a relevant extension for travellers wanting to turn an encounter with the church into a wider reading, rather than adding a museum out of habit. On a short trip, choose between this focus and another personal interest: architecture, urban life or food. A day’s quality also depends on what receives your attention.

Focaccia: a meaningful taste all year round

The regional atlas describes focaccia barese as available year-round: crisp outside, soft within, with tomatoes making its surface juicy. The described preparation includes potato in the dough. Tasting lets you compare baking, texture and topping. Our question at the bakery concerns that transformation: how do simple ingredients become a food suited to a pause in urban life?

A documented price: a product, not lunch

As a concrete reference, Panificio Pace’s site lists a packaged 700 g focaccia barese at €7.50, observed on 2026-10-06. The product sheet specifies modified-atmosphere packaging and presents it for online sale. This is not the price of a freshly baked slice, lunch or an Apulica experience, and includes no service from us. It gives scale to an identifiable product while preserving the distinction between buying food and organising a trip. Shipping conditions apply separately.

How we would place Bari in the journey

On arrival, we would keep the route contained: orientation in the centre, a carefully chosen place of worship and a bakery stop, leaving rest before moving inland. A night in town allows a broader comparison between neighbourhoods and a focused visit. Altamura then takes the discussion from the urban oven to bread culture; Giovinazzo and Molfetta offer a coastal return on a different scale from the regional capital. Apulica’s role is to organise these relationships, arranging interpretation, meals and transfers around the travellers.

How to shape a journey here

We can organise arrival in Puglia with an interpreted visit, a food stop and transfers inland, or a night in town before an Alta Murgia and coastal route.
