Lecce: carved stone and workshop traditions
Lecce deserves to anchor a chapter of the journey rather than serve as a diversion from the sea. Give it time to alternate façades and interiors, streets and workshops, a square and a food stop. Details can become the thread running through your day.

Stone and Baroque architecture
Piazza del Duomo brings together the cathedral and bell tower; Santa Croce offers another reading of the stone through plants, animals and its large rose window. Looking closely at surfaces reveals the character of different buildings. Part of the pleasure is returning to a façade after learning to recognise a few of its details.

Papier-mâché: another material of the city
Lecce’s papier-mâché tradition developed particularly during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Figures can combine straw structures, modelled parts and paper shaped with heated irons. This craft connects light materials, expression and skilled handwork, offering a different way of reading the city alongside its monumental stone architecture.
Three textures to taste
Ciceri e tria combines chickpeas and pasta, with some of the pasta fried for crunch. Rustico encloses béchamel, tomato and mozzarella in puff pastry. Pasticciotto pairs shortcrust pastry with custard. Rather than a checklist, these are three ways to understand local food through contrasting textures and the setting in which you taste them.
Visit costs: the bell tower changes the ticket
The LeccEcclesiae price list checked on 2026-10-06 distinguishes adult tickets: €21 for the cathedral and bell tower, Santa Croce, Santa Chiara, San Matteo, Antico Seminario and MuDAS; €11 for the route without the tower. These are admission prices, not an Apulica day or guide fee. Advance booking charges are separate where applicable. The central ticket office is in Antico Seminario, Piazza del Duomo 5.
Three materials for one day
Build a Lecce day around stone, paper and dough. At Santa Croce, choose a plant motif and a figure before looking again at the whole façade. Papier-mâché changes the question: how can a light material acquire volume and movement? At the table, compare textures, from fried tria to rustico pastry and pasticciotto shortcrust. These need not become three meals: a lunch dish and a sweet taste may suffice. The thread works without prior art-history knowledge. An arranged workshop encounter can complement the museum through present-day practice, distinct from a historic object or a hurried souvenir purchase.
Use Lecce as a base, not as the whole of Salento
A stay in Lecce can anchor several days: art and craft in town, language and rural culture in Calimera or Martano, mosaic and coast in Otranto. Choose one connection per day rather than returning from an overlong sequence. Consider spring or autumn for walking; in summer alternate focused visits with pauses and leave the sea its own day. A central base supports evenings on foot, while an outer location may suit frequent transfers. Apulica can coordinate guiding, craft encounters and meals around a consistent rhythm. A multi-site admission ticket does not require visiting everything within a few hours.
YOUR JOURNEY
How to shape a journey here
Journey idea: make Lecce a cultural anchor for Salento, then choose a coastal contrast. Otranto brings mosaics and the Adriatic; Gallipoli offers an island town on the Ionian side. Explore one side properly rather than crossing them all in a day.
