Calabria: agricultural varieties and remembered flavours
A garden can reveal more than a list of typical products. A variety’s name, a saved seed and the way a crop is used offer three keys to Calabria. This theme suits travellers interested in small, concrete differences, connecting farmland with what they meet at the table.

The Giardino delle Esperidi project
FIRAB documents the historical Giardino delle Esperidi project, addressing Calabrian herbaceous and fruit diversity from the Pollino to the Aspromonte. With AIAB Calabria, ARSAC and the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, its work included field conservation, seed collection and propagation of varieties.

Different ways of conserving
FIRAB distinguishes field conservation, conservation away from the growing site and work on farms. The project included experimental fields, seed reproduction and propagation of fruit trees: a resource of varieties rather than a current visitor-park programme.

Questions that change a visit
Ask what an ingredient is called, who passed down that name and how it is used in cooking. These questions identify, open a memory and lead towards tasting. Note a concrete detail such as shape or texture beside the name. Appreciating biodiversity does not require counting hundreds of varieties: two well-explained examples can reveal a difference easily missed at a market.
Taste without erasing the variety
Compare simple preparations with one question: how does the chosen ingredient change this dish? A complex sauce may obscure the product of interest. A taste alone followed by its role in a recipe traces the passage from ingredient to cooking. Remembering a use as well as a name lets an agricultural detail become a new habit at your table.
Crop timing and the journey’s rhythm
For a fresh vegetable, build the stop around that crop; for seeds and memory, around whoever preserves it. No single month reveals every variety. On a northern-Calabria route, pair this theme with the Pollino, Civita or Corigliano-Rossano, choosing one farming chapter while retaining landscapes and towns: the ingredient connects places rather than replacing them.
A thread for your journey
Journey idea: follow one chosen ingredient from countryside to table in northern Calabria. The historical project documents a context; the editorial idea seeks recognisable varieties and practical uses without assigning services to unidentified farms.
