Terranova di Pollino: the Lucanian side

The mountain can also be heard: traditional instruments add a story of skills to the landscape and village walk.

What to notice

The town occupies the upper Sarmento valley on the Lucanian side of Pollino. Its settlement history connects with the fief of Noepoli; the mountain landscape is the main key to understanding its position.

A detail that changes the visit

Bagpipes, surdulline, accordions and tambourines belong to Terranova’s musical tradition. The regional heritage record describes skills passed on within the community and efforts to preserve them: construction, learning and shared occasions stand behind the sound. A surdullina should not be reduced to a generic folk instrument; recognising the names already encourages closer listening. This tradition adds a cultural dimension to the mountain. It does not imply a permanently accessible workshop, but offers a story to understand and a meaningful question to bring to the village.

A mountain with its own voice

The park connects Terranova with Timpa Falconara, the Brigands’ Cave and the Garavina gorge, while also highlighting material culture: watermill ruins and traditional instrument making, including the cupe-cupe. The procession of the cinti for Our Lady of Pietà adds collective devotion. The village is more than a departure point for the mountain: landscape, sound and public gestures belong to one story.

Choose the landscape before the trail

Choose a precise subject for a first day: rock faces and landforms, or water and traces of work. A map provides orientation; a guide can connect the landscape with the village. Do not combine cave, gorge and summit merely because they share a description. A pause before a rock face, a walk and a return to the centre can already make a complete experience. Travellers who do not want a long hike should retain the day’s narrative. Prepare compatible rhythms with a shared meal as a meeting point, allowing actual ground conditions to determine the route.

Sound as an encounter with place

Instrument making prompts different questions: how is an instrument built, who plays it and on which occasions? An encounter, where it can be arranged, should reveal materials and workmanship rather than offer a performance detached from place. Apply the same approach to lunch: ingredients, transformation and the everyday pantry. Connect Terranova with Senise to compare mountain and agricultural landscapes, or allow another stage for Rotonda’s side of the park. An overnight stay gives the village time rather than squeezing walk, encounter and transfer into a few hours. Apulica can coordinate the elements around a theme, without assuming local craftspeople are automatically available.
